Y5 Weekly Update: 29th May - 2nd June 2017

	This Week	Next Week
Literacy	Drama This week our focus shifted on to being able to learn and deliver lines to an audience. We focused on projecting our voices and delivering the lines with confidence.	Drama and Poetry Next week we will continue to focus on delivering our lines to the audience and our acting skills.We will also be thinking about how poetry can influence people in conjunction with our UOI work
Maths	Written Addition & Subtraction and Factors This week we focused on the written compact method of adding and subtracting 5 digit numbers. We also investigated patterns, revised factors carried out a factors investigation.	Fractions Next week we will be working with fractions. Adding and subtracting fractions with the  same or similar denominators and converting answers to a mixed number. We shall revise multiplying fractions by whole numbers.
Unit of Inquiry	How we express ourselves This week we began to think about how we express ourselves. Along with preparing for our upcoming production, we will started to think of the different ways we express ourselves and what are the messages people take from the different means of expression.	How we express ourselves Next week we will start sorting out and going further into how songs, words, images and pictures can be used to target certain audiences. The context for our inquiry will be Band Aid and the LIve Aid concerts of the mid 1980’s.
Notices and Events	A letter will be coming home next week about our trip to the National Gallery 6/6/17 Reading comprehension and Math’s homework is set online each week and is ongoing. Thank you, for ensuring that the children are keeping up to date with this. We also have our lines and songs to learn for the upcoming production.

Literacy	Scientific Explanations and assessment   Last week we focused on our persuasive writing assessment and carried out science experiments.We began to write up how we carried out  the experiments, what we found and analysed the data. Maths	Geometry and Assessment Last week we completed our revision of what we had covered so far this term before undertaking our half termly assessment.We then reviewed the papers together.	Written Addition & Subtraction, Factors & Equivalent Fractions This week we will focus on the written compact method of adding and subtracting 5 digit numbers before recapping on factors and equivalent fractions.

Mind over matter - telekinesis

As part of our science activities we used our super minds and some simple science to magically move a psi wheel without touching it.

Science Week - What affects the rate at which a spinner falls?

The question that drove this investigation was, what affects the rate at which a spinner falls.

We made our predictions, our spinners and them tested them, recording our data in a table in our books.

Science Week - Can you weigh air?

We began with the question, can you weigh air? Following that we investigated our question using balloons ,wool, rulers and Sellotape. Our conclusion was that, yes , you can weigh air.
