Craft Afternoon Reminder

Dear Parents,

We would just like to remind you that this Friday is our parent/child craft afternoon. We would love it if you were available to attend. Grandparents or other carers should also feel free to join us. Instructions will be presented in Thai and English. Kru Bee and Kru Boom will also be on hand to translate.
We look forward to seeing you at 1pm.

Pie Charts

Our Numeracy lessons on data handling continue! Today, we learnt about pie charts and the children created their own charts based upon a research topic of their choice. After gathering the data that they needed, they then went into the ICT suite to input this into a program which helped us to generate a chart.

Once the children had completed their pie charts and saved their images, we returned to the classroom and that each pupil took it in turns to question their peers on the data that they had collated. They asked questions such as 'Which sweet was the most popular?' and 'How many children chose Liverpool FC as their favourite football team?'.

Great job everyone, I was super impressed by the hard work that went into your pie charts.

Stretchy Materials

This morning, we have been investigating the stretchiness of different materials. Some clothes such as leggings are best made from stretchy materials. Imagine if tights did not stretch and had to be made the exact size and shape of your legs! Today, the Year 3 pupils helped Miss Campbell to decide which tights to buy. She wanted them to be nice and stretchy so that they wouldn't restrain her movement. Here is how we investigated the matter...

1. First, we discussed what we were testing.

2. Then, we examined three different pairs of tights and made predictions about which would be the stretchiest and why.
3. Next, we talked about how we would carry out the test and wrote down our methods.
4. We decided to measure the tights before and after they were stretched. We stretched the tights by dropping weights into the leg.
5. We made the test fair by dropping the same weight from the same height each time.
6. Our conclusion was that Sheer Support tights were the stretchiest!

Great work 3C, thank you for your help!

Line Graphs

This week, we have been learning to interpret and draw line graphs. A graph shows information that is connected in some way, for example a change over time. In today's Numeracy lesson, each group was given a beaker of hot water. Using a thermometer, we tracked the temperature drop over a half hour period. Then, we represented the data in the form of a line graph. All groups were very sensible around the hot water and worked well as a team to calculate time intervals accurately.

After some careful measuring and plotting, we were able to see that the temperature of the hot water decreased over time.

House Colours Day

Dear Parents,

This Friday 26th September will be House Colours Day! This will be a fun and exciting day with the children working in teams to find out more about their house.

Children should come to school in their house colours shirt and their PE shorts and shoes.

Thanks,

Ascot Primary

Waterproof Materials

During Science lessons, Year 3 continue to investigate the properties of different materials. This week, we are exploring waterproofing. If materials do not absorb water at all they are said to be waterproof, a property that can be very useful for example in clothing, packaging and housing.

We decided to experiment which materials would be the most practical in making an effective umbrella. The children made their very own umbrellas out of a variety of materials, then they dropped water onto these. We all watched carefully to see which umbrellas would  absorb or hold the water. This was measured by observing the number of drops and the length of time that they stayed on the umbrella. We also felt the interior, to check if water had seeped through.

Children made umbrellas from paper, plastic, metal, and fabric. Can you guess which were the most waterproof?

After our investigations, we were able to conclude that metal and plastic are both waterproof materials. Paper and fabric was porous and water leaked through the material which became wet and soggy!

Celebrating Holi

Holi is a Hindu festival of colour which is held in May or April. It is celebrated mostly in India and is a time when people remember when good triumphed over evil.

Hindu people try to forget about all the bad things that have happened over the course of that year and rubbish is burnt so they can make space for their new beginnings. People also celebrate by throwing coloured paint on each other.

We are enjoying finding out so many interesting facts about India and learning about Holi has been one of our favourite parts of the topic. Take a look below to see how 3C recreated our very own festival.

Even Miss Campbell joined in the festivities! Much to the children's delight, she allowed them to bless her with blue, red, yellow and green paint. She will NOT be doing this again!!!

As you can see, we all got very messy and loved every minute of it!
