Tuning In

This week we are tuning into our new topic 'How We Organise Ourselves'. 

We started the week with some team building whilst orienteering in our house teams. We had to collect ten envelopes from different locations which had been marked on a map for us. When we had found all of the envelopes, we opened them up to find different words and pictures inside. 

We then all worked on a Google Document to try to figure out how all of the clues were linked.

International Day

 We are having a fantastic day being French artists in Year 5!

Advertising Campaigns

This week Y5Y have been taking action and using everything that they know about energy and the planet to warn people about global warming. They are currently working hard on creating ad campaigns to encourage people to take action. Their ideas include logos, jingles, posters, cartoons and scripts for television adverts.

We took some of our inspiration from the adverts below.

Elastic Band Powered Cars

Last week we made some fantastic elastic band powered cars. Unfortunately they didn't all work as well as we expected them to however we used to some great reflective skills to think of ways that we could improve them next time.

  

   

Weekly Review and Preview

Is it hot in here?

Today we used our solar ovens to complete some science investigations. Some of us looked at which ingredients would melt fastest between cheese, chocolate and butter, others decided to see if the type, size or shape of the ingredients made a difference. We made sure that we kept our tests fair by keeping all of the variables the same apart from the one that we were testing.

We learned a lot and it was great eating the melted chocolate too!

Measuring Weight

As part of our measures topic this week, we weighed different carbohydrates. We found out that although the quantity of some of the different carbohydrates looked like more, it didn't always mean that they were heavier. For example, 100g of pasta looked bigger than 100g of rice. Big does not always mean heavy and vice versa!

We also converted between grams and kilograms before working on some real life problems such as, 'What weight of carbohydrates should a family of four people consume in a week?'

Going with the flow!

We predicted the amount of water in different size bottles and then measured the volume. Judging by the volume in the room, the children certainly enjoyed the activity!

Solar Ovens

As part of our 'Going Further' section of our Unit of Inquiry, we have decided to create solar ovens. We spent a long time carefully measuring and cutting them before adding black paper, foil and cling film to make them as efficient as possible.

Today we are thinking about how we can use them to create a fair science investigation which we will carry out tomorrow. Keep a look out for more photos!
