Tuning In

We began with a challenge of the following letters

A A E E I H H T T S N N R G P L

and the clue "Good people do this with our home"7 3 6. The children then had to find the three words of 7, 3 and 6 letters.

The children showed some super creative thinking skills, resilience and good humour in discovering the solution.

Y5 Weekly Update: 18th April - 21st April 2017

This Week

Next Week

English
Persuasive texts
This week we have studied the features of persuasive texts in detail, looking closely at the content and format. We discussed, annotated, recorded and began to plan what we will write about, making sure we have the powerful vocabulary and adventurous conjunctions needed.
Planning, drafting and editing
Next week we shall begin to draft out our persuasive texts. We will be discussing our editing to ensure  improvements suggested add to the quality of the final draft. Finally we will present our persuasive argument to the class.
Maths
Mental Addition and Subtraction
We worked on mental addition and subtraction of money using rounding, counting up and counting back. The week was concluded by working on word problems that required more than one step to solve.
Multiplying Fractions and Short Multiplication
Next week we will begin by multiplying fractions by a single digit. We will move on to comparing long and short multiplication of 3 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers, before using the short multiplication method.
Unit of Inquiry
Tuning In
We began tuning in to our new topic by solving a word puzzle of jumbled up letters, given a clue and the number of letters in each word. We then moved on to exploring the possibilities of what sharing the planet may mean, before thinking about the consequences of not sharing.
Finding Out
Next week we will begin to find out the answers to some of our questions and following our lines of inquiry into what are the causes of conflict, what are human rights and equality, strategies used to resolve conflict and the consequences of resolutions.
Notices and Events
Just a reminder that the children have weekly Mathematics activities set on the computer and reading comprehension activities on a shared Google Doc.

Trip to Kenya

Y5Y have had a very exciting afternoon visiting Kenya for a (virtual) field trip. We visited Mitahato Teaching Farm in Nairobi to find out how they help local families by teaching them how to grow enough produce to feed themselves, as well as a little extra to sell for a small profit. So far this year they have already helped over 200 people to become farmers which we think is pretty amazing. Our guide Emmanuel was great and he even brought us a home grown banana to share!
