Soil Layers

Soil covers so much of the earth, we have been learning about the different layers of soil. Soil is made up of distinct layers, each has its own characteristics that make it different from all of the other layers. These characteristics play a very important role in what the soil is used for and why it is important.

A layer of dark fertile soil made from rotting plants lies at the surface. The, there's the top soil which contains plants roots and dead animal remains. The subsoil has fewer plant and animal remains but it has lots of minerals from the layers above. Finally, there's bedrock which is made of of rock fragments.

To represent this, we gathered materials from different parts of the playground to make examples soil layers. We began by selecting rocks from the car park. Then, we dug deep into the ground to find soil which contained  large rocks. Next, we dug shallow holes in the flower bed and gathered soil which contained smaller rocks. Finally, we made our way to the field where we scooped up top soil and grass. Whilst we were there we met a green little friend whom we named Roger!

Who knew that soil could be so interesting!?
