Using and Applying Our Understanding of Math's to Solve a Challenge

We have worked on another of Dr. Mark Biddiss' challenges today. Beforehand, we did our mindful breathing exercises, followed shortly after by our math's challenge. Once more, there was some great thinking taking place as the children developed their use of working systematically and making use of pattern to take risks and show resilience as they began to successfully tackle the challenge.

Stepping Up in Math's

Today we worked on one of of Dr. Mark Biddiss' problems. An athlete trains by running up 3 steps and back 2. First we worked out how many stages it would take to climb 15 stairs then we calculated  how long it take to get to the 15th step if each 3 steps forward took 1 second and 2 steps back took 1 second. There was some great thinking and discussion involved as the children "stepped up" to the challenge!

Taking Action

This week we have finished off the end of our topic all about the ways in which we can take responsibility for our own learning. As a finale to our topic, we had to demonstrate how we would take action to help ourselves and others to learn better. We all chose to either make board games or posters and they looked fantastic as well as being very informative.

Comprehension Homework

The Year 5 children have been set some extra comprehension homework to complete everyday. Their task is to read the story ' Tongue Tied' by Paul Jennings.

Every evening, the children will be expected to read a double page then they should answer the questions underneath.

The children are also encouraged to read the answers that have been written by their class mates. If they think that the answer can be improved, or if they think that the answer is effective, then they can comment. This constant peer assessment will help the children to develop their comprehension skills through learning from each other. Mr Ellis and myself will also be making comments to encourage the children to answer the questions as thoroughly and accurately as possible.

The children can find the link to the story in their Gmail or by searching for 'Tongue Tied' in their Google Drive.

Debating the innocence or guilt of the three little pigs

The child from Year 5 presented some very good points of view and countered with enthusiasm and passion today.

Developing our debating skills

Today we considered the question, "Is it ever justifiable to kill an intruder?" Initially we listed ideas for and against each point of view, following that we began to debate with one side arguing for and one against.

Thinking of points of view.

Today we began to think of how different points of view can influence how people perceive situations. We looked at two video clips based on the Guardian (UK) newspaper's advertisements and considered how the information is reported can guide a persons thinking.

Weekly Review and Preview

Performance Exchange

This week we had another visitor in school. This time it was Daniel all the way from Performance Exchange in the UK. First he performed to us all and told us about a dog who wanted to fly. Then we had a workshop which involved movement and mask making.
