Poetry that adds up!

In Literacy last week we wrote acrostic poems based on our 5 R's for Life-long learning. We used a website on the internet to write each poem. Following that we used our first draft to reflect on our poems and then improve them with a second version .
In numeracy we focused on place value of 5 digit numbers and the written method for formal addition. We also investigated what happens when you add 2 ,4-digit palindromic numbers (numbers written the same backwards and forwards eg 3443 + 4554). We worked systematically and discussed how the pattern changed.

Our Life-long learning skills

We used a random name picker from the internet to divide the children into five groups: responsible; reflective; reasoning; resourceful and resilient. Each group then brainstormed what they thought their life-long learning skill was. What did it look like and how could it be shown for ex ample. The individual group members became the experts for their group. Next the children formed a new group consisting of an expert from each of the groups. Each expert was then given five minutes to teach the other group members about what they had discovered.

Dream Catchers

This week in Literacy we wrote about our dreams. We then made some dream catchers in art. They took a while but we did a fantastic job!

Welcome Back!

Dear Year 5 Parents,

Welcome back! I would like to welcome you and your child to a new year at Ascot. I am very much looking forward to teaching your child over the coming year.

This year we will be reading a variety of texts including stories, newspapers, nonfiction articles, play scripts and poetry.  We will also have a big emphasis on reading at home which will be expected for ten minutes everyday. The children will then complete two or three sentences in their reading diaries to show their understanding of the text. This will then be peer assessed every morning during homeroom time. In English, we will practise grammar skills and learn new spelling rules weekly however there will no longer be a formal spelling test. Instead, the children will be encouraged to use the new spelling rule in their writing throughout the week to ensure that they fully understand and that they are able to put the rule into practice. We will continue to use Abacus in Maths and for homework, however there will often be additional homework set for Numeracy too.

We will continue to study our foundation subjects through units of inquiry. The children will practise their research and inquiry skills and become more independent in their learning. In addition, the children will be given inquiry homework where appropriate.

The children are required to bring their P.E. kit every Monday and swimming kit every Tuesday. Every child should have a hat to wear at play time. Following the whole school rule - if the children do not bring in a hat they are not allowed to play at break times. Also if they do not bring in their swimming kit they are not allowed to play at play time.

In regards to communication, email or the use of the contact book is preferred but if you would ever like to speak over the phone or in person, please do not hesitate to make an appointment. I am also available before school for urgent matters. Communication is key and I am always available to discuss matters relating to your child's education or welfare.

Finally, I would like to say just how excited I am to begin the academic year. I look forward to meeting each of you in person and working in partnership with you throughout the coming year. If you have any questions now or at any time in the future, please do not hesitate to contact me at yell@ascot.ac.th

Yours sincerely,

Miss Yell

Optional Homework Activities

Dear students,

I have very much enjoyed teaching you this year. It is important over these holidays that you keep your mind active as well as your body.

Here are some fun ideas for you to do around the house here.

If you want to, you can work on your Literacy, or you may want to play Numeracy games.  Likewise Science may also be something you are interested in.

If you are feeling creative, why not try Artzooka to work on your artistic talents.

Have a great holiday and don't forget to read lots of books and programmers can be found here.

Mr. Williams and Mr. Millican
